Curved Erection (Peyronies Disease)

Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s Disease is a bend or curvature of the Penis, which can make Sex difficult and painful.  Most commonly the bend is upwards but can be to the left or right.  It is most noticeable when the penis is erect.  Most males have a slight bend in their penis, present from Puberty.

What causes it?

The cause is unknown.  The bend is caused by a growth of ‘plaque’ at the area affected.  A hard lump can often be felt.  You should visit a doctor to make sure there is no other problem.  The bend may take a few months to develop and this can affect sexual performance.  This may result in Erectile Dysfunction which will require further discussion and support.

What is the treatment?

Treatment may not be necessary as the condition usually stabilises over a year.  Treatment is usually to reduce pain and slow down or stop the progress of the disease.  Vitamin E has been useful in some cases for the control of pain.  An operation may be considered though, only in severe cases and when the disease has run its course.

What should you do if you think you have Peyronie’s disease?

Go to your doctor as soon as you feel any pain or abnormal lumps in your penis.  Remember, the disease is not linked to infection or cancer and the main aim of treatment is to prevent and correct the Penile deformity.
